A frenzied call for assistance from a distant research base on Mars sends a squad of mercenary Marines into activity. Led by The Rock and Karl Urban, they descend into the Olduvai Research Station, where they encounter a horde of bloodcurdling creatures, lurking in the shadows, killing at will. Once in that location, the Marines must use an armory of firepower to execute their mission: nothing escapes alive.
Serenity (2005): Much loved cult TV director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel) makes an outstanding first foray onto the big screen with Serenity, the cinematic version of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series, Firefly. A mixture of space western, comedy, and drama, Serenity follows captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew whilst they trade their way about the borders of civilized society. Of specific interest are two passengers they accept, Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau), a brother and his telepathic sister on the run from the corrupted governing Alliance. As infamous previous members of the anti-Alliance opposition, Mal and his crew make it challenging for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything breaks down entirely once a government assassin is sent out to recover River. As Mal is pushed to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newbies, it becomes evident that River shields both a dangerous secret and staggering fighting abilities, and Mal determines that discovering the truth about what she knows could just be deserving of his time.
A lot of the movie’s action sequences centre on Summer Glau’s martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her part with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu, in addition to stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda, and as a result executed almost all of the stuntwork herself. As well as the stellar stunts, lifelike graphics, and a frequently haunting musical score, the film’s actors exhibit an uncommon chemistry that brings watchers both into their lives and into a potential version of mankind’s future.
