Modern Times

Modern Times is the final silent-film that Charlie Chaplin made before moving on to using sound. In it his iconic Little Tramp character struggles to survive in the modern, industrialised world.

This DVD also comes with an impressive amount of special features, which include an extensive documentary and deleted scenes. There’s also scenes from other Chaplin movies and Liberace singing "Smile", amongst other extras.

The Mighty Boosh: Series One To Three - Special Edition £17.93

The Mighty Boosh: Series One To Three - Special Edition

Although I’m not personally a fan of The Mighty Boosh, I can see why some may see the antics of Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt as funny. Let’s just hope that they can keep it going into the future, and not burn out like David Walliams and Matt Lucas have with Little Britain.

The The Mighty Boosh: Series One To Three - Special Edition boxset contains every episode from the three series’ that have been made so far. Across the seven discs you’ll also find many extra features, including a documentary and deleted scenes.

Death Sentence (Blu-Ray) £7.83

Death Sentence (Blu-Ray)

Death Sentence is a film very loosely based on the Brian Garfield novel of the same name. Kevin Bacon stars as Nick Hume, a man who turns into a vengeful vigilante killer after his son is murdered by a gang as part of an initiation ritual.

It’s an OK film but if you’re expecting it to be anything like the book, I’ve got bad news for you - it’s almost completely different. The novel is a sequel to Death Wish, and for some bizarre reason this film seems like a remake of the film version of that book!

300 (HD-DVD) £2.83

300 (HD-DVD)

Those of you lucky enough to own an HD-DVD player probably don’t care that the format is dead, as most retailers have been selling off their stock at crazily low prices - which means that you can get high definition goodness for less than the cost of a magazine.

300 joins the ranks of the Transformers: Special Edition HD-DVD, by being both cheap and excellent. Although it doesn’t look brilliant in HD (the director intentionally made the picture grainy), you’d be hard pushed to get this for as low a price on standard DVD.

base.com have this available for only £2.83 - for more information, click here. Blu-Ray owners can still pick up a copy of 300 for the slightly higher price of £9.98 from Amazon.

Kidnapped: The Complete Series £5.99

Kidnapped: The Complete Series

American TV is very strange, in that if a network decides to cancel a show then it’s usually pulled off the air near-enough straight away. At least in this country we let them finish a series before yanking it!

Kidnapped sadly fell foul to this, even though it was actually quite good. In it’s one and only season, an affluent New York couple’s son is abducted on his way to school - so they enlist the help of a professional investigator who works outside the law.

Harold Lloyd: The Definitive Collection £17.99

Harold Lloyd: The Definitive Collection

Although Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton are perhaps the most well-known silent comedians, we shouldn’t forget the work that Harold Lloyd did as well. His ridiculously high pricing for showing his films on television made his reputation and public recognition suffer, but the quality of work should ensure we never forget how good he was.

Harold Lloyd: The Definitive Collection is a nine disc set that contains nearly all of the feature films he made, along with some of his best short films and various featurettes. There’s also an audio commentary on "Safety Last!" with his friend Rich Correll and critic Leonard Maltin.

If you fancy this set, click here to buy it for £17.99 from HMV.

Disney Family Collections From £28.96

Disney Family Collection: Volume One

There’s a couple of Disney Family Collections available, which each contain a total of 10 films. Many of these are lesser known Disney titles (and none are animated), but all should entertain viewers both young and old.

Inside the Disney Family Collection: Volume One boxset you’ll find Treasure Island, 20000 Leagues Under The Sea, Davey Crockett, Darby O’Gill And The Little People, Kidnapped, Swiss Family Robinson, Greyfriar’s Bobby, Big Red, The Incredible Journey, and Island At The Top Of The World.

Disney Family Collection: Volume Two

It’s possibly a bit wrong to call the movies in these sets "lesser known", as many of a certain age will no doubt have seen many of them before. However to youngsters, films like "Escape From Witch Mountain" mean little to nothing.

The Disney Family Collection: Volume Two boxset has another 10 movies to enjoy. These are The Absent Minded Professor, Parent Trap, Gnome Mobile, Blackbeard’s Ghost, the aforementioned Escape From Witch Mountain, One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing, the original Freaky Friday, Unidentified Flying Oddball, Condorman, and Watcher In The Woods.

Science Fiction Boxset £7.93

Science Fiction Boxset

Science fiction films normally fall into two brackets: geeky and technical, or futuristic and mental. Personally I prefer the second kind, so this Science Fiction Boxset is the type of thing I enjoy.

In it are copies of The Abyss, Aliens, The Fifth Element, Minority Report, and the re-imagining of Planet Of The Apes. All are very good except the last film, which is a bit poo.

Monkey!: The Complete Series £42.98

The Monkey!: The Complete Series boxset contains 13 cheap DVDs

Monkey! is the English language version of the Japanese series Saiyuki, which is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey To The West. It’s quite an unusual show, as it was performed by Japanese actors in China and was then dubbed into English.

Inside the Monkey!: The Complete Series boxset you’ll find 13 discs that contain all 52 episodes made, as well as the previously undubbed ones. Bonus material is fairly thin on the ground, with a random quote generator being the rather disappointing highlight.
