Columbo: Seasons One To Eight £33.89

Columbo: Seasons One To Eight

Instead of using the tried and trusted method of the "whodunnit" detective story cliché, Columbo instead showed the person committing the crime at the start of the episode – the plot mainly revolving around how the perpetrator would finally be exposed and arrested.

Inside the Columbo: Seasons One To Eight boxset you’ll find all 45 installments of the regular series, along with the first four TV movies from 1989. No extra features, but this will last long enough for that to matter very little…

Sendit.com have this available for £33.89 – for more information, click here.

Alien Quadrilogy £7.99

Whilst it’s fair to say that Alien Resurrection is a quite awful piece of cinema, Alien 3 is nowhere near as bad as you’d imagine – this Alien Quadrilogy boxset actually has a slightly different version of the movie as well, which makes it even more enjoyable than before.

You’ll also find the first two excellent films in the series (Alien and Aliens), along with hours and hours of bonus material. I could list it all here, but there are nine discs worth and it wouldn’t be all that exciting to read!

If you fancy this, click here to buy it for £7.99 from Play.com.

Thriller: The Complete Series £28.97

Thriller was a British programme that was originally broadcast on ITV between 1973 and 1976. It’s an anthology series, with each installment having a self-contained story and its own cast – as the title suggests, each is a thriller of some sort (from tales of the supernatural to down-to-earth whodunits).

Thriller: The Complete Series is a massive 15 disc boxset that contains all 43 episodes ever made. Also included is an extended version of "Nurse Will Make It Better" and the 1974 special "Who Killed Lamb", plus a stills gallery and original set designs.

Independence Day: Definitive Edition £2.99

Independence Day: Definitive Edition

What would happen if aliens decided to conquer Earth? That’s the question posed by science fiction film Independence Day – a somewhat cheesy, but exciting, blockbuster starring Will Smith. The most memorable scene from this is probably the destruction of The White House, which is depicted on the boxart above.

The Independence Day: Definitive Edition DVD is a double disc set that comes with a few featurettes on the making of the movie, and a quite comical alternative ending. There’s the usual barrage of trailers and TV spots to be found as well.

Play.com are selling this for £2.99 – click here for more details.

Max Manus: Man Of War £5.47

Norway isn’t exactly the first country that you think of when it comes to decent war films, but Max Manus: Man Of War is just such a thing. It’s based on the real-life efforts of the resistance fighter Max Manus during the Winter War against the Soviet Union, through the outbreak of World War II and the German occupation of Norway until peacetime in 1945.

As far as I can tell, this DVD sadly comes with nothing in the way of extra features – not a big deal when you’re dealing with such a good movie, but it would have been nice to have a commentary or something.

Click here to buy this for £5.47 from Amazon. Definitely one of those cheap DVDs that is well worth picking up if you’re interested in the history behind one of the unsung heroes of WWII.

The Omen (1976) (Blu-Ray) £6.99

The Omen (1976) is one of the most iconic horror films of all time, which is often compared with The Exorcist – both share many themes, although this movie has a much better cast and an altogether more believable story. Death scenes in this will linger long in the memory too, like the hanging near the start and a violent decapitation caused by a horizontal sheet of plate glass.

Picture and sound quality in this HD release are as fantastic as you can imagine, plus there is some interesting bonus material included as well. The audio commentary is good, but the real highlights are "The Omen Legacy" and "666: The Omen Revealed" documentaries.

Hellraiser (Blu-Ray) £6.98

Hellraiser is a British horror film based on the critically acclaimed novella "The Hellbound Heart" by Clive Barker, who also wrote the screenplay and directed the movie. It explores the themes of pain as a source of pleasure and morality under duress and fear.

This high definition release presents the ultimate in picture and sound quality seen up to this point, with a wide range of extra features thrown in too. These include an audio commentary, a couple of featurettes and interviews with various members of the cast and crew.

Amazon have Hellraiser, on Blu-Ray, available for £6.98 – for more information, click here.

Complete Coogan Boxset £37.27

Complete Coogan Boxset

Steve Coogan has been one of this country’s best comedians over the last ten years – you just have to look at some of the characters he’s created to see how talented he really is, with Alan Partridge in particular becoming something of an iconic figure (as stupid as that may seem!).

The Complete Coogan Boxset contains near enough everything he’s ever done on television. You’ll find every episode from Knowing Me Knowing You, Knowing Me Knowing Yule, I’m Alan Partridge, Saxondale, Dr Terrible’s House Of Horrible, Coogan’s Run, Paul And Pauline Calf’s Cheese And Ham Sandwich, Paul And Pauline Calf’s Video Diaries, Introducing Tony Ferrino: Who And Why A Quest and The Tony Ferrino Phenomenon across a whopping 14 discs.

The Royle Family: The Collection £8.95

The Royle Family: The Collection

The Royle Family: The Collection isn’t quite the complete set of every episode. Although it has all three series’ plus the 1999 and 2000 Christmas specials, it sadly doesn’t have the Queen Of Sheba finale from 2006. Sad times.

If you’ve never seen this BBC comedy before, let me fill you in on what it’s all about. It’s basically a show about an average working class family from Manchester who deal with the big issues in life, such as whose turn it is to go to the off-license. Great stuff though.

Zavvi are selling this set for £8.95 – click here for more details.

The Fifth Element: Special Edition £2.99

The Fifth Element: Special Edition

The Fifth Element is mostly set during the 23rd century, and involves the survival of humanity – which becomes the duty of a taxicab driver when a young woman falls into his cab. She is the fifth element of the title, and must be united with the other four before a dark planet (representing pure evil) collides with the Earth…

The Fifth Element: Special Edition release comes with two discs that are packed with extra features. The first has an audio commentary with members of the special effects crew, whilst the second contains an extensive documentary on the making of the movie and some other short bits and bobs.
