The Best Films Of The 80s Boxset £8.98

To many the 80’s was a combination of bad hair, bad music, and even worse music – however, the movies from the era were nothing short of timeless. I’d be here all day if I listed even some of the best, but suffice to say that it gave us such legends as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone (for which we are *ahem* eternally grateful).

Inside The Best Films Of The 80s Boxset you’ll find six great movies. Back To The Future, The Karate Kid, St. Elmo’s Fire, Secret Of My Success, Police Academy and Tootsie are all very re-watchable – it’s just a shame there’s no sign of Ghostbusters, etc.

Amazon have this set available for £8.98 – for more information, click here.

Smallville: The Complete Seventh Season £10.97

While it’s fair to say that Smallville doesn’t entirely stick to the Superman origin story, it is a very good and modern re-telling – it’s just a pity that we didn’t also get a Bruce Wayne series (one was planned but never commissioned, and with Batman Begins doing it in a decent way it will probably never happen).

Anyway, Smallville: The Complete Seventh Season contains all 20 episodes from the seventh year of the show. It doesn’t look as though there are any special features though, but I very well could be mistaken – chances are there is a featurette or two included.

If you fancy this, click here to buy it for £10.97 from Amazon.

Coraline: Collector’s Edition £7.68

Coraline is an animated stop-motion 3-D fantasy film based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name. It follows a bored young girl who discovers an alternate reality behind a secret door – when it becomes too dangerous, she must work out how to save her family…

This Coraline: Collector’s Edition set contains both 2-D and 3-D versions of the movie, with four pairs of 3-D glasses so you can experience the film as it was meant to be seen. You’ll also find a feature-length audio commentary, a "making of" documentary and some deleted scenes.

Let The Right One In £6.97

When you think of Sweden, I very much doubt that horror is the first thing that springs to mind (unless of course you’re not a fan of Abba). Anyway, Let The Right One In is that rare breed from the land of Ikea – a terrifying piece of cinema that will linger long after the credits have finished.

This excellent film has some equally decent special features for its DVD release. An audio commentary with the director and author (in English), four deleted scenes and a photo gallery should be more than enough to tide you over until the inevitable Hollywood remake tarnishes it!

Amazon are selling this for £6.97 – click here for more details.

Californication: The Second Season £14.93

Relegation to one of Five’s sister digital channels mean that fewer people in this country get a chance to see the excellent Californication, which is a great shame – it’s easily the best thing David Duchovny has done since The X-Files, and his character of Hank Moody is a modern classic (in my opinion anyway).

Inside the Californication: The Second Season boxset you’ll find all 12 installments that make up the second year. Also included are a "behind the scenes" featurette and a bunch of interviews with various members of the cast and crew.

The Unit: Seasons One To Three £10.45 Each

The Unit: Season One    The Unit: Season Two    The Unit: Season Three

The Unit focuses on a top-secret military outfit, which has been based on the real-life Delta Force. Interesting fact for you – this show is made by David Mamet, the guy who wrote the play Glengarry Glen Ross (which was turned into an excellent film that I insist you watch at some point).

Although it’s sadly now been cancelled in the States, the first three seasons are available on DVD. Each contain a varying number of episodes (13 in the first, 23 in the second and 11 in the third) and come with a fair few extra features, including audio commentaries and deleted scenes.

Click here to buy The Unit: Season One, click here for The Unit: Season Two, or click here to get The Unit: Season Three – all of which are £10.45 each at Zavvi.

Directed By John Ford £5.29

Heralded by such greats as Orson Welles and Ingmar Bergman as one of the greatest director’s of all time, John Ford became famous for both his westerns (such as "Stagecoach" and "The Searchers") and adaptations of classic 20th century American novels like "The Grapes Of Wrath".

Inside the Directed By John Ford boxset you’ll find four of his best movies. The Informer (1935), The Fugitive (1947), Mary Of The Scots and The Wagonmaster are all still entertaining enough to hold up today.

Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) £3.48

Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased): The Complete First Series    Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased): The Complete Second Series

Though Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer are more commonly known for their slightly mental comedy routines, they did actually have semi-serious roles in the remake of Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) – which is about a detective who dies and then comes back to assist his former partner.

Only 13 episodes were ever made in total, all of which can now be yours on DVD. Special features can also be found on the first release, including a "making of" documentary, outtakes and a music video.

If you fancy Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased): The Complete First Series, click here to buy it for £3.48 from Select Cheaper. Click here to buy Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased): The Complete Second Series for the same price from the same retailer.
