Monty Python: The Movies £6.93

Monty Python: The Movies

It’s fair to say that there were will probably never be another comedy group that is successful as Monty Python have been, especially when you consider the short-term thinking that seems to be rife amongst programme makers. Shame, as six members have shown that true talent lasts a lifetime…

Monty Python: The Movies is a six disc boxset that contains all four films the team have made together. And Now For Something Completely Different and Monty Python’s The Meaning Of Life are both good, but both Monty Python And The Holy Grail and Monty Python’s Life Of Brian stand as two of the best comedy movies ever made.

The Game: Special Edition £2.99

Michael Douglas is perhaps best known for his roles in such films as Wall Street and Falling Down, but one of his most underrated movies has to be The Game. He stars as an investment banker who is given a mysterious gift – participation in a game that integrates in strange ways with his real life…

The Game: Special Edition DVD contains hours of bonus material. This includes a feature-length audio commentary with members of the cast and crew (including Douglas), behind the scenes footage, "on location" featurettes and a couple of trailers.

Somers Town £3.99

Somers Town follows two teenage boys, adrift in an adult world, who develop a mutual trust and acceptance through an unlikely friendship. Filmed in black-and-white, this is a study of a social environment in London, from the director of such excellent movies as This Is Britain and Dead Man’s Shoes.

Bonus material on the DVD doesn’t amount to much, with some short interviews with the cast and crew. However, the extensive question and answer session with Shane Meadows is well worth watching – especially if you are a budding director.

The Godfather Trilogy £8.99

For all of the criticisms of The Godfather Part III over the years, it at least has two very memorable scenes – the helicopter shooting and the final shots which show Al Pacino at his very best. The other films in the series really don’t need any kind of introduction, as they are quite simply two of the best movies ever made.

Inside The Godfather Trilogy boxset you’ll find all three films, plus audio commentaries by director Francis Ford Coppola on each. It’s also worth pointing out that The Godfather Part II is across two discs, which means you’ll have to switch over halfway through (annoyingly).

Chuck: The Complete First Season £7.57

After rumors that it could have been axed after two years, Chuck is coming back for another season thanks to a "Save Chuck" campaign in the U.S. Good thing too, as this action comedy series about an average guy who accidentally receives the world’s greatest spy secrets is incredibly funny.

Chuck: The Complete First Season is a four disc set that contains all 13 episodes from the first year, along with a featurette on the making of the show, some deleted scenes, four webisodes and a gag reel.

The Illusionist (2006) £2.99

2006 was a little bit of a strange year in the world of cinema, with two big releases featuring stories about magicians at the turn of the 20th century. The Prestige was quite good, but The Illusionist was considerably better – the story is much more engaging and Edward Norton is great in the lead role.

The DVD comes with an audio commentary by director Neil Burger and a featurette on the making of the movie, both of which are pretty interesting if you enjoy the film.

Fahrenheit 9/11 £2.93

Fahrenheit 9/11 is an award-winning documentary film by the ever-controversial Michael Moore. This takes a critical look at the presidency of George W. Bush, the War on Terrorism, and its coverage in the American news media – more specifically, their inaccurate and unobjective analysis of the event.

This single disc DVD only comes with a theatrical trailer, but it’s definitely worth picking up at this very low price – you might not agree 100% with what Moore has to say, but he at least makes some valid points.

The Hut are selling this for only £2.93 – click here for more details.

Hammer House Of Horror £7.93

Hammer House Of Horror

Hammer are known for their series of films, but they also had a short-lived TV series called Hammer House Of Horror as well. I say short-lived because it only ran for a total of 13 episodes towards the end of 1980.

This four disc set contains every installment starring such people as Pierce Brosnan, Peter Cushing, and Brian Cox. Also included is a piece on the history behind the famous studio, which is very interesting indeed.

Defiance (2008) £6.99

Instead of focusing on either the British or American point of view during World War II, Defiance instead looks at how the Polish Jews came together for common protection and to oppose the German occupation of their homeland.

The DVD is quite packed for such a film, being that it comes with a fair number of special features. These include an audio commentary by director Edward Zwick and four featurettes that look at the making of the movie.

HMV have this available for £6.99 – for more information, click here.
