The Omen (1976) (Blu-Ray) £6.99

The Omen (1976) is one of the most iconic horror films of all time, which is often compared with The Exorcist – both share many themes, although this movie has a much better cast and an altogether more believable story. Death scenes in this will linger long in the memory too, like the hanging near the start and a violent decapitation caused by a horizontal sheet of plate glass.

Picture and sound quality in this HD release are as fantastic as you can imagine, plus there is some interesting bonus material included as well. The audio commentary is good, but the real highlights are "The Omen Legacy" and "666: The Omen Revealed" documentaries.

The Royle Family: The Collection £8.95

The Royle Family: The Collection

The Royle Family: The Collection isn’t quite the complete set of every episode. Although it has all three series’ plus the 1999 and 2000 Christmas specials, it sadly doesn’t have the Queen Of Sheba finale from 2006. Sad times.

If you’ve never seen this BBC comedy before, let me fill you in on what it’s all about. It’s basically a show about an average working class family from Manchester who deal with the big issues in life, such as whose turn it is to go to the off-license. Great stuff though.

Zavvi are selling this set for £8.95 – click here for more details.

The Fifth Element is mostly set during the 23rd century, and involves the survival of humanity – which becomes the duty of a taxicab driver when a young woman falls into his cab. Jarhead, Black Hawk Down And Tears Of The Sun Triple Pack £4.83

Whilst older war films like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket are excellent in their own right, some of the more modern attempts have been just as good – with this Jarhead, Black Hawk Down and Tears Of The Sun triple pack containing three of the best.

Of this little lot, Black Hawk Down will probably be the one you’ll come back to again the most – the powerful real-life story behind the Battle Of Mogadishu, which was integral to the capture of a Somali warlord, is expertly re-enacted by Ridley Scott.

The Ultimate Horror DVD Collection £9.99

The Ultimate Horror DVD Collection

Whilst The Ultimate Horror DVD Collection sounds as though it should contain simply the best that the genre has to offer, some may be a little disappointed with what they find inside – although ten films for under 20 quid does represent fantastic value for money.

The Omen, The Blair Witch Project, From Hell, 28 Days Later, Deathwatch, Dog Soldiers, Jeepers Creepers 2, The Sin Eater, Wrong Turn, and Creep are all decent enough – it’s just that many would agree that there are better scary movies around.

HMV have this available for £9.99 – for more information, click here.

Tarzan (1999): Special Edition £3.99

Disney’s Tarzan film is based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs story Tarzan Of The Apes, and is the very first (and only) motion picture version of the Tarzan property to appear in animated form on the big screen – something which I didn’t realise until literally two minutes ago.

This double disc set comes absolutely packed with bonus material, including countless featurettes and interactive games. There’s also quite a lot of Phil Collins, so you have been warned!

Life Is Beautiful £2.99

After winning a clutch of Academy Awards in 1998, it’s no surprise to see that Life Is Beautiful is still very highly regarded by many people. What is a little surprising is the fact that the first half of the film is basically a romantic comedy (with elements of slapstick), but the second becomes much darker and deals with some very hard-hitting subjects.

This is an Italian language film, but please don’t let this put you off – it’s seriously well worth watching. Sadly the DVD comes with no extra features of any kind, which is both disappointing and somewhat strange at the same time!

Play.com are selling this for £2.99 – click here for more details.

The Boys From The Blackstuff £7.99

The Boys From The Blackstuff is a British drama series that was originally aired back in 1982. This is a warm and humourous, but ultimately tragic, look at the way economics affect ordinary people – being that it’s a response to the end of a male working class culture destroyed by Margaret Thatcher.

This three disc set contains all five episodes, along with the original "The Black Stuff" play (which also features an audio commentary by writer Alan Bleasdale and director Jim Goddard).
