The X-Files: Essentials £5.99

The X-Files: Essentials

The X-Files is an American science fiction series about two FBI agents who investigate unsolved cases that involve paranormal phenomena. Although it was very good for a while, towards the end the stories became more and more ridiculous – sadly a trait that’s been continued in the recent big-screen film sequel.

The X-Files: Essentials is a double disc DVD which contains eight of the best episodes. Whether they are or not remains to be seen, as there’s no sign of some classics (no "Tooms", "Eve", or even the very good "Home").

Romanzo Criminale £2.99

Romanzo Criminale

Although some people don’t like watching foreign language films with subtitles, if you can get past this hang-up then you’ll discover some fantastic pieces of work. Italian movie Romanzo Criminale is one such example, as it charts the rise of three young criminals to the dangerous world of organised crime.

The DVD only comes with a "making of" featurette in terms of bonus material, but it’s another one of those films that doesn’t particularly need many.

The Ren & Stimpy Show: The First And Second Seasons    The Ren & Stimpy Show: Season Three And A Half-ish

The Ren & Stimpy Show is an animated series that follows the adventures of a neurotic "asthma-hound" chihuahua and a simple-minded manx cat. None of their escapades make much sense, but to be honest this is part of the beauty of the show – you really don’t know what they’ll do next.

All 18 episodes from the first two years can be found inside The Ren & Stimpy Show: The First And Second Seasons boxset, along with audio commentaries, the unedited pilot, and uncut versions of four installments. Click here to buy this set for £12.42 from Select Cheaper.

Meanwhile, The Ren & Stimpy Show: Season Three And A Half-ish set contains all 10 episodes from the third year and the first seven from the fourth. Click here to get this for £9.97 from Amazon.

X-Men Double Pack £3.89

X-Men Double Pack

The first X-Men film has a story that is very faithful to the comic books, but the sequel is where everybody sat up and took notice of the series. X2 raised the bar for superhero movies in general, with some excellent acting and genuinely decent special effects – it was probably the best in the genre, until Batman Begins came along.

This X-Men double pack contains the X-Men 1.5 DVD, which is a fancy name for the Special Edition DVD of X-Men, and X2. Both are loaded with extra features, ranging from audio commentaries to deleted scenes via countless featurettes.

Eddie Murphy Collection £11.61

Eddie Murphy Collection

Though it may seem hard to believe now, Eddie Murphy used to be one of the best comedy performers in the world – this was before he had kids, and decided that everyone should enjoy such guff as The Haunted Mansion and The Adventures Of Pluto Nash (although the Shrek films are very good, so he deserves a bit of credit for his role).

The Eddie Murphy Collection boxset contains four excellent comedies in the shape of 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming To America, and Trading Places. Sadly it also includes a couple of stinkers – The Golden Child and Norbit.

Camp Rock: Extended Rock Star Edition £6.93

Camp Rock: Extended Rock Star Edition

After the success of the High School Musical films, it was inevitable that the Disney Channel would make more musicals starring irritating teenagers – so say hello to Camp Rock. The big stars of this are The Jonas Brothers, who seem to be popular down to the fact that they don’t believe in sex before marriage (fools!).

The Camp Rock: Extended Rock Star Edition DVD has a longer ending and various other fluffy features that kids will enjoy. Just be prepared to hear some truly awful songs being sung by some very annoying teens…

Asda have this available for £6.93 – for more information, click here.

The IT Crowd: Series One & Two

Though it’s been some time since Father Ted finished, the comedy series is still rightfully regarded as one of the best we have ever had in this country. The IT Crowd: Series One & Two boxset contains the first 12 episodes, alongside a fair amount of bonus material. This includes audio commentaries, outtakes, and a short film titled "Hello Friend".
